There are seven basic elements that is required when it comes to starting your organic container gardening: Plants, Water, Sunlight, Temperature, Nutrients or Fertilizers, Space, and Patience.

Plants are one of the seven basic elements of organic container gardening because it is what you will plant, grow, and harvest. Obviously, it is what organic gardening is all about. Choose plants that you want and desire to grow and harvest. Foodstuffs or big tall trees may all be grown and harvested using pots and containers. Determine what types of plants or crops you prefer and use them wisely.

Your first step is to take your newspaper and layer it over your topsoil. The newspaper acts as a weed barrier. You could use the commercial weed barrier that you see at many home and garden centers, but newspaper can be free if you convince your neighbors to give you their copy after they have read it.

When putting down your newspaper, I like to double layer it. That makes it “thick” enough to act as a great barrier, but porous enough for water and nutrients to get to the soil. As a side not, do not use any laminated sections of your newspaper as they may not be safe for your garden due to the inks used.

The second tool to make sure your gardening tool set includes is what’s called a garden fork. It’s good for several different purposes which include mixing any compost down into the soil and also loosening up that same soil for planting. Also, a tool like this generally has a shorter handle and is useful for fine detail work in between rows of plants or between the individual plants themselves.

With your newspaper spread out over your entire garden, use your garden hose and set your nozzle to mist and water the paper. This will help keep it down while you prepare for the next step. You don’t want to drench it. You want to lightly mist it with water so that it is damp and has some weight to it, to keep it down.

In our next step we want to cover the newspaper we had just laid down. To cover the newspaper, I like to use a black mulch mixed with compost I have made so as both resources decompose into my garden they also add nutrients. Take your mulch/compost mix and put it down over top of the newspaper no less than two inches thick. This gives plenty of weight to keep the paper down, enough to cover the paper, but more importantly, impedes weed growth while retaining water moisture in the soil, especially when it gets hot during the later summer months.

Weeds are annoying but they do not have to be a problem, and they certainly should never be a reason as to why you should not have a home vegetable garden. If you follow the information above you will eliminate ninety to ninety-five percent of the weeds that you will get on occasion. Now all you have to do is get up in the morning and pick the one or two weeds you will get and that will keep your garden 100% weed free.

How to Grow Your Chia Herb Garden

If you want to have some herbs readily available for you, you might want to think about growing a Chia herb garden. A Chia herb garden will allow you to have fresh herbs in your home year round. You can have your very own culinary herb garden with your Chia herb garden. Here are some ways to keep your herb garden flourishing all year.

Sprouting Seeds

When you first start seeing the seeds sprout in your Chia herb garden, it is important that you keep the sponges moist. They need to be very moist and you should be able to see about a quarter inch of water in the saucer liners. If there isn’t enough moisture and water in the sponges, there may not be enough water for the seeds to grow well, and you may not be able to have the herbs you want. If you need more information on herb garden information, you can always call the Chia herb garden help line to learn more.

In addition, it really does not matter whether the seeds have darkness or light when they are first sprouting. Instead, you need to keep in mind that the soil temperature should be kept in proper temperature. The soil temperature would be perfect around 70 degrees Farenheit. If your house is too cold, you can use your water heater and place your Chia herb garden on top of it. You can place the garden on top of your refrigerator to keep the temperature right if your house is too warm.

In conjunction with the temperature, herbs will grow best with increased humidity around them. One way to create this environment for your Chia herb garden is to place an open plastic bag around the garden. You can use a small sandwich bag if it fits, or a larger gallon sized bag if necessary. You will start to see some condensation in the bag because the humidity will increase. Warm and humid environment would be the best for seeds to sprout!

After The Seeds Sprout

After the seeds sprout, things are different. First, the Chia herb garden should be placed near a windowsill so that it receives plenty of sunlight. A southern or western window will give enough sunlight as long as the window is not blocked by anything. However, you need to be careful enough to keep your Chia herb garden about four or five inches away from the window. In the winter, the window can cause the herbs to freeze, and in the summer they can get too hot. In addition, make sure that you only water the herbs like you would water any other house plant. Once the seeds sprout, you wouldn’t need to give it any extra amount of water.

The main advantage of hydroponics plants over fetilized conventional plants are that hydroponics plants never receive harmful components mixed with nutrients. Some says that the phrase  hydroponic comes with the Greek word  hydro. Hydro  means water and therefore both these Greek and Latin meanings can be assumed to be correct on their influence on hydroponic plants. Survival Radio Tips

How Do You Stay In Touch When You’re Off the Grid?

When it comes to preparing for disasters, whether a short-term situation such as a weather related event, or long-term such as an economic collapse, communications is a vital part of survival preparedness. One should carefully consider how they will communicate with family, neighbors, allies, etc. as well as how they will receive information about the situation.

When selecting radio equipment, there are some key factors one must consider.Today we will briefly discuss band selection, power options, security, and size.Keep in mind that the best option is always the one that is tailor made to best fit a particular situation and set of circumstances. A careful evaluation of those factors will greatly aid in proper radio selection

There are three main options for survival radio bands or frequency ranges. They are Ultra High Frequency (UHF), Very High Frequency (VHF), and High Frequency (HF). Each band has its upside and its downside. UHF has a very short radio wavelength that allows for a short antenna, but it also limits the range since it is adversely affected by obstacles. VHF offers greater range and is less affected by buildings and terrain features, but requires a longer antenna for optimum performance. This band is very popular in marine and aviation uses. HFhas the potential for around the world communications, but is the most technically challenging to use. A more thorough understanding of radio wave propagation and antenna theory is required to utilize HF radios to their highest potential.

Armed with a basic understanding of the different bands, one can begin to select radios for a particular situation. The ultimate setup would be a selection of different radios, though this may not always be practical. A good HF base station with a few handheld UHF radios would be great and will be more than sufficient in most situations.

Power source is critical when it comes to survival radios. When referring to power, we are referring both to how the radio is powered and to how that power source is recharged. Basic power options are battery power (DC) and residential (AC). Though many base station units operate using AC, in a survival situation we should stick to equipment that runs on batteries as AC will likely be unavailable other than in the form of generators.

There are two main options for batteries. Off the shelf batteries, such as AA are a good start. This will allow you to stockpile batteries and not be dependent on any other source of power. The downsides are the limited number you are able to stockpile and shelf life. Eventually some sort of rechargeable system will be required. Once there, your options are to recharge from a generator, solar or from a vehicle.Once again this becomes a matter of your particular needs and circumstances. The best all around solution is a radio that can use both off-the-shelf batteries and a high capacity rechargeable battery pack that can be recharged from both AC and 12 volt vehicle systems. With today’s options, this is not a lot to ask for.

In the digital age, encryption has become a much simpler process and nearly all radios offer some degree of security. From the cheap FRS radios to the high end commercial units that offer computerized security options, radio security is more widely available than ever. However, one must keep in mind from whom one is securing communications. If it is from your neighbor down the street, basic encryption is generally sufficient and highly effective. If you’re trying to hide from a three letter government agency, no level of off the shelf radio encryption will suffice. If you are in dire need of secure communications, I suggest you study the use of code-words, one time pads etc. and never depend on any form of electronic encryption.

As for size, survival radios will either be classified as handheld/man portable, vehicle mounted or base stations. Once again, selection should be based on your particular situation. Keep in mind that the larger the unit, the greater its range, but also the greater its power consumption. If you plan to bug out to the hills, a base station will be useless and handheld units are the practical option. But if you plan to remain on a homestead a base station can be powered with a generator, solar, hydroelectric, etc. and will give you world-wide capabilities.

You should now be ready to begin evaluating your radio requirements and preparing your communications plan. Remember, radios, as a means of communication, are useless if the people you wish to talk to are not using compatible equipment. Make sure those with whom you plan talk to are as prepared as you are and discuss communications protocols well before you need to use them.Test your radios frequently and practice using them with your family and neighbors. The more you learn about radio fundamentals the better your communications abilities will be when the time comes to use them for real.

Growing Herbs: Basil

Don’t you just love basil? Having an Italian dish without basil just is not worth it. It is one of the best herb plants to start with because it is not complicated to grow, not complicated to harvest and it smells awesome too.

Even though this small herb is native to the tropical Pacific islands, you cannot look at a French, Greek or Italian menu without seeing basil over and over again. I’m not sure how basil got to Europe, but I am glad it did. One of my favorite dinners is pesto, which is a easy green sauce made by chopping a whole lot of basil and mixing it with olive oil. Scrumptious!

Just a few of the many varieties of basil that you can select from are:

  • Sweet Basil: This kind is the most popular one for recipes. Sweet basil has glossy leaves and provides the full basil taste.
  • Lettuce-Leaf Basil: For a milder taste, you might want to choose this variety which has broad leaves. Green Ruffles, Napoletano and Mammoth are only a couple of the numerous varieties of this type of leaf.
  • Bush Basil: Tiny Leaf Purple, Bush, Piccolo Fine Verde, Spicy Globe and Green Bouquet are just some of the many types of this shorter basil which is great for edging.
  • Lemon Basil: This lemon scented variety has short, little leaves. Herbal tea, fruit salad, vinegar and poultry and fish dinners are just some of the things these leaves can be used for.
  • Purple Basil: Like its name might suggest, this kind has wide, purple leaves and pink flowers. This variety is best in vinegars and Greek dishes.
  • Thai Basil: This kind of basil has long, thin leaves and is (of course) from Thailand. It also has a slight licorice taste that adds extra taste to Thai and Indian dinners.

Even though some people may prefer to buy their basil plants at the nursery, buying seeds is also a good way to begin. Regardless of how you start, your plants should reach about 20 inches high as long as they have plenty of sun and well-drained sod.

I snip off the white blossoms that will start showing up during the summer. The reason I do that is because I am not in it for the blooms; I want those nice one-two inch leaves. Pinching your plant back makes the plant grow fuller (more leaves).

Harvesting your basil is as easy as one, two, 3: simply cut the stem just before the blossoms, pick off the leaves and dry them. The leaves can be stored in a freezer bag once you dry them. If truth be told, you do not have to dry them, they can go straight away into your freezer. You can even put them in a container and cover them with olive oil, which can release all their flavor. They’ll last like that for several months.

You may raise basil inside, but I cannot recommend it. I attempted to over-winter my basil a few years ago with no success. It really requires about 5 hours of direct sunshine a day with moist soil to grow and succeed. I just did not have the right amount of natural light in my kitchen.

Good luck with your herb gardening. Be sure to let me know how your herb garden grows.

Plant Enemies In Florida – How to deal with them

The strategies used in combating plant enemies are of two classes:

There are the ones used to provide a shield for plants and insecticides that are designed to kill insects and funguses.

Shielding is the use of a covered frame that surrounds the plant and is usually made of a wooden box.  Many of these are covered in plastic, glass or mosquito netting to protect the plant from insects as well as cold temperatures.  The plastic and the glass covers are both help the plant retain heat in cold weather.   The shielding approach is used to give the plants an early start in growth.  This method is commonly used when growing melons, cucumbers and other vine vegetables.  The cut-worm is a major threat to plants such as tomatoes and cabbage and the devices most commonly used to protect these plants are cardboard, tarpaper collars and tin.  These are placed around the plant in a height that is several inches above the plant base and below the soil at least one inch or more.

The Stink Bug

One of the biggest enemies of plants in my area is the stink bug.I am from the Jacksonville area in North East Florida and these bugs cause a great deal of aggravation and destruction here.

In Jacksonville Pest Control Services are used to help us win against this common pest.  Here are some of the Solutions in Jacksonville Electronic Pest Control Natural Pest Control, Organic Pest Control ,Ultrasonic Pest Control

Cold Weather a Major Enemy of Plants

Many people think that as soon as the weather starts getting cold and they see some of the leaves start failing from the plants, it is time to shut down the garden for the rest of the year.    This assumption is wrong and it is really an important time to maintain the health of your garden to ensure that you will have a nice crop for the next year.

The truth is, it takes very little time to properly prepare your garden for these cold temperatures for the upcoming winter.  It is when you see the nighttime temperatures dropping lower than forty-five degrees Fahrenheit for more than four days straight, or frost is in the forecast.  This usually happens in late October or November but the presence of falling leaves does not mean that it is time to close down the garden for the year.

The things you want to do to prepare your garden at this time are as follows;

·    Start evaluating your gardens design
·    Determine which plants performed well and which ones did not.
·    Fall is a good time to begin making the decision on which plants you want to include in your garden next year.
Make your choices which of your plants you want to keep.

Gardening As A Nice Gesture For Her

Do you have a wife or a girlfriend? Do you live together? Do you want to show her that you care by giving her something special that does not cost a lot of money? If you answered yes, then planting a nice garden could be the answer.

A gardening book is the first thing to look into getting so you know what you are doing and what to expect. They are usually inexpensive, especially the ones that are small handbooks or mini guides. They can be bought at almost any grocery, tool, home, outdoors, or super store. With a book, you will be able to determine what you are going to need in order to make one and how much time it will take as well as maintenance.

Even if she wants a rhodium plated ring, you can please her with the surprise of flowers. They will not be the run of the mill store bought kind, but instead special ones in all different colors and types. Does she have a favorite flower? If so, plant lots of them so when she steps outside and sees them, she will feel special.

Roses are among the most popular choice. It is simple and quite easy to find seeds of any and all colors that she will adore. Options like traditional red, white, yellow, purple, and pink are available. They can grow in several sizes from big rose bushes to small ones. The size of your lot will help you figure out which size variety is perfect for you and her.

Look at each location to find the best place to start planting all the things. Remember to find the areas that do and do not get sunlight. Areas that get a lot of light produce more, while shaded areas do not. Plants use the sun as a food source so location is very important and needs to be thought about.

If she is a lover of designer shoes, but they are too expensive, why not buy an inexpensive pair of leather brown boots? The reason in not for style, but for durability. Tell her you got them so the two of you can be outside together so gardening becomes an activity for the two of you. It is a great way to spend some quality time with one another.

So if you are on a budget but want to make your special someone feel pleasantly surprised, plant a garden. It does not cost much to do this depending on what you want to plant. In fact, just grass and flowers will probably do just fine.

A Great Hobby For All Ages

Most people think that for exercising to be effective, it has to be done at the gym. However, attending a gym can be quite costly. Plus if doing repetitive routines sounds like a drag to you, you might give up soon enough. Luckily for you, you may have a dose of exercise even without leaving your home.

But first consider having a fit and healthy body, instead of aiming to lose weight fast. Think of long-term goals, which you will enjoy most likely throughout your life. So just exactly what type of exercising you can do in your home? Cleaning the house, that is!

Use the stairs frequently to exercise your lower body. To force yourself to climb up and down the stairs, do not clean an entire floor first before moving to the next. Instead, clean a small portion on one floor, then go to another floor to clean a small portion there. As a finale, vacuum-clean the stairs for a dose of weight lifting.

Do away with your usual dyson vacuum dc17 when cleaning the floor. It makes your floor cleaning efficient, so you exert less effort. Instead, use a broom and mop when cleaning the floor. Get on all fours and pick up debris and animal hairs on the carpet. If the carpet is not at all that large, take it outside and shake off the dust.

While cleaning the floor, move the furnishings around. This will provide resistance to your work out, instead of just reaching under them with a broom. For very large pieces of furniture, you can let them slide on the floor, or ask for help. But for small ones, try carrying them to get them out of the way of your cleaning, then getting them back into place. You can dust surfaces by having rags in your both hands. This routine will work out your arms, making them firmer and stronger.

Cleaning and maintaining the garden is also a good way to burn off excess calories. Start by trimming the bushes, followed by removing the weeds. Then proceed with sweeping all the fallen leaves, branches and other debris. Mow the grass, then follow it with watering of the plants.

Of course your work out should be accompanied by healthy eating habits. Preparing your own meals gives you the benefit of knowing what goes into your mouth. When cooking low-fat dishes, worry not that they might end up uninteresting. You may add zest to your creations using spices, mirin seasoning, and the like. Also, you can simply buy a recipe book designed for health-conscious people.

Getting Started Growing Herbs

You can go over to the local home improvement, nursery or greenhouse to buy your herbs. You could also germinate your own plants from seeds. Those two are all fine and well, but a third method, called propagation is less costly than purchasing your plants or starting them from seeds.

Propagation is simply locating a friend or neighbor who already has some plants and then taking either part of their plant through division or by taking a cutting of their plant and growing roots for before planting it.

When using division, breaking up isn’t hard to do, you just cut the herb into smaller, separate plants. Some plants are easier than others to divide, like chives and chamomile. Dig all the way through the herb with your trowel and the roots, which will completely separate the plant into multiple herbs. If you are separating a creeping plant like English chamomile, it will be much easier.

For small herbs, you can use a couple of forks instead of a shovel when dividing. If you water the herb the night before, the soil will be nice and moist and ready for division. Next, all you do is replant the divided part just like a plant that you would buy at the store.

Another thing that is different is that you are going to want to fertilize the new little plant when you put it into its new home. above and beyond the fertilizer, I’d advise you use a root stimulator to assist those recently chopped off roots to grow fast.

Taking a cutting is even simpler than division because you won’t have to dig up anything. Just keep in mind that your cuttings will not have any roots and cannot be planted in the ground or in a pot until it does, which could take several weeks.. Another potential problem is that not all plants can be propagated by making a cutting from an existing plant.

New, immature plants are better to get cuttings from than the older, woodier plants .  But like I always say; make do with what you have. When taking a cutting, follow these guidelines:

  • Simply snip off a branch of the plant that includes at least three leaves and then trim off the leaves
  • Now [here is|here’s] where I [am different|differ] from other [people|folks]: take your branch and let it sit for at least 8 hours in a diluted mixture of both root stimulator and water.
  • One way or the other, once you do that you’ll want to then put the stem down into your moistened, rich earth. You’ll need to bury the stem so that no bare part (where you removed the leaves) is visible.
  • Add some more water and keep soil moist but not flooded. From here, just be patient because it’s going to take several weeks for the new leaves to sprout.

Some of my favorite herbs to start from cuttings include: rosemary, salvias, scented geranium, vervain and white willow.

Good luck with your herb gardening. Be sure to let me know how your herb garden grows.

Outdoor Herb Gardening

I remember when I planned my first herb garden. It was located in the rear of the back yard under a Bradford Pear tree. I laid out the bed with red bricks and divided it into 4 quadrants—one section for each group of herb plants. Each section was used for a different kind of plant.

In one section I started an Italian herb garden that included oregano, basil and parsley. In another section I grew a tea garden, full of peppermint, anise, chamomile and fennel. Another section had healing herbs, including aloe vera, horseradish and calendula. The last [section|quarter] had cosmetic [herb plants|herbs] like for lavender, chervil and lemon verbena that I used in soaps, lotions and shampoos.

I was really happy with the outcomes that first year. The second year didn’t go so well, because the mints I had planted quickly took over, my chamomile spread outside the herb garden, and my lavender died from overexposure.

It did not work, because I hadn’t looked at the most important thing: what my herbs need in earth, light and water to thrive and grow successfully.

Before you plant a single herb, be sure to check out the place where you’ll eventually plant your herbs so that you will know the best herb plants for that place. Each [plant|herb] [require|need]s optimal conditions to [thrive|persist|grow|survive] and prosper. Try [herb plants|herbs] like white willow, thyme, sage, poppies and lemon balm.

Here are some other herb plants that you can be successful with:

  • Basil: This is one of those herbs that will pretty much do all the work for you. Basil needs full or part-sun and can grow in a bed or container, as long as it has good drainage, which reminds me to mention that you’ll only need to water it when the earth is dry. If you are going to be cooking with your basil, be sure to use the sweet basil variety of the herb for best results.
  • Lemongrass: I love the fresh, clean smell of lemongrass. It is one of the happy little grasses that will get pretty high in a single growing season, adding a pop of bright green color your garden and a scrumptous lemon scent. Although you can begin with seeds, I purchase mine from the local greenhouse, probably because I can’t wait to get that fresh lemongrass to my Thai and Indian dinners.
  • Cilantro: I must confess that cilantro is my new favorite herb to grow in my garden and use in my cooking. Its distinctive taste makes it an awesome addition to your Tex-Mex dinners and it is easy to grow.
  • Chamomile: I use the German Chamomile type in my hanging baskets where the results are wonderful. Snip off a few of the leaves to use in your calming tea or even your bath for some added luxury. Its light, woody, apple scent is seductive to your senses, while its white petals with bright yellow centers remind me of happy little daisies, so how can you go wrong?

Now it is up to you to get going, with a little planning, you’ll be digging in the dirt in no time. Just don’t get bogged down with trying to be perfect about it—there is no such thing as perfect so just have fun with it.

Good luck with your herb gardening outside. Be sure to let me know how your herb garden grows.

Grow Your Own Tea Herbs

Trying to get healthy? You should experiment with herbal tea because it is caffeine-free, tannin-free and calorie-free. Even better than that, you can cultivate it in a lot of exciting tastes for not much money. If drinking it does not come to you naturally, you can quickly begin a daily routine of tea drinking by adding it your breakfast or early morning snack.

The positive effects of of drinking herbal tea have been proven for 100s of year. Each herb has its own unique benefits. While some can ease your nerves, others can get you going. One plant can help with an uneasy stomach while still other herbs can ease your mind.

A few beds of of your favorite tea herbs will get you through the long, cold winter with delicious warm tea and you can use the fresh herbs for your summer iced teas.

Fragrant herbal teas are uncomplicated to make directly from your herb garden. Just clip off a little bit of your favorite chamomile, peppermint, spearmint or fennel and you’re ready for tea time.

When you go to make your tea, use a generous teaspoon of dried herbs for each cup of tea. If you are making a pot of tea use one teaspoon per cup (plus use an additional teaspoon for better results).

Because your fresh tea herbs are not as potent and the dried herbs, you’ll need to use more of them. Try 2 to 3 teaspoons for each cup of tea.

Although you can brew your teas using any one of the many yummy tea herbs, it is also good to mix it up with a customized blend. Add lemongrass or rosehip to your beebalm tea for a tangy, citrus tea.

You can use all of these herb plants in your herbal teas:

  • Beebalm: Want a pop of citrus in your herbal tea? Beebalm will do the trick. Beebalm has a light hint of orange, even though it’s part of the mint family of herbs. Beebalm was first used in a tea by the Oswego Indians in Canada. You can use it the same way they did, to help your upset stomach. You can even use it to ease with your sore throat.
  • Hibiscus: There are many varieties of hibiscus to choose from when planning your garden. If you’re planning your herb garden for tea, I recommend the rose mallow kind because it has a slight hint of citrus. The marsh mallow (where the name, not the product marshmallow comes from) kind of hibiscus is known to ease sore throats and help with stomach ulcers—just gather the petals and brew them!
  • Lemon Verbena: If you like lemon like I enjoy lemon, then you will love lemon verbena, which has the fragrance and flavor of lemon whether you brew fresh or dried in your hot or iced tea. This is an especially good herb to add to your green tea, which make it more tasty.
  • Rosehip: The hip of the rose herb has been thought to be among the most valuable herbs around due to its high vitamin C content. You can steep the rosehips to keep away colds and the flu.

You might also enjoy any of the mints, lemon balm, or lemongrass in your next pot of tea.

Don’t forget that herbal teas make great gifts—it does not cost much and your friends and family members will certainly appreciate it.

Good luck with your herb gardening. Be sure to let me know how your herb garden grows.

Lawn Care Is A Holistic Procedure

Lawns are integral parts of every garden.  A well prepared lawn improves the beauty of your garden greatly. Since they are both ornamental and functional, lawns need to be well designed and maintained.  Weeds, overgrowth, diseased patches etc are the most common enemies of lawns.  Since these adversaries can rob every charm out of your lawn and thereby your garden itself, you need to be guarded against these and take proper lawn care measures timely and periodically.

Lawn care is a process that starts right from the moment you decided to have a lawn in your garden.   You should know the variety of grass and the ideal planting season beforehand.  Lawns installed in colder areas should be able to cope with the cold.  The prevailing climatic conditions of the area invariably affect the health of the lawn.

You need to take correct lawn care by providing it with the essential water and dung.  Moving helps the turf maintain its optimal health.  You have to be sure of the amount of water and fertilizers applied since overfeeding or underfeeding could result in the turf getting sick.  Every sort of grass has its own requirements.  Compost, corn gluten meal etc are very effective in preserving the greenness of your lawn.

If you feel that your lawn needs improvement of some sort, make a first hand evaluation of the situation by checking the lawn thoroughly for bald patches, insect attack, weed infestation etc.  Find out why these are occurring and take preventive measures.  Make sure that the lawn is not being shaded by any shrub or tree, since this can result in bald patches.  Planting additional grass without taking remedial actions may not be a good idea.

You should not think that lawn care is an exceedingly difficult process.  If you persistently keep a tab on various facets of the lawn like the plants, the grass, trees around, the turf, the borders etc, the process would become easier.  The feeding process, watering, protection from being trampled by slipshod people, impedance of pest and weed expansion etc need sufficient attention from your part.

How To Improve Your Health By Gardening

I worked for a big company for many years. It was stressful and I finally decided to quit and start a consulting business out of my home. It was great at first. I liked waking up when I wanted, working when I felt like it, and I loved being able to take a day off if I needed to do something important. After a few months though, I noticed I had put on several pounds. I was not overly concerned. I told myself I would start a workout routine after my business was settled.

Two years later I was fifty pounds heavier. I could not ignore it any longer, I really needed to do something. But where was I going to find the time now? All the work I put into my business was paying off, and I was busier than ever! What started out as me being able to make my own schedule turned into me being unable to shut the office door and walk away. I was tired, stressed, overweight, and starting to miss my office job.

As a last-ditch effort to turn things around, I made the decision to join a gym. I figured the gym contract and expense of the whole thing would guilt me into never missing a workout. It would force me to follow through.

I kept putting it off. Then, one particularly stressful day, I made some coffee and went out on the back porch to take a break. It was a beautiful day, and I was feeling upset that I never got outside anymore. To distract me from all the negative thoughts and stress, I grabbed a book from the side table. It was a gardening book.

I had always planned on starting a garden. I loved everything about the idea, the warm soil, watching the seeds grow, harvesting fresh produce. I collected gardening books and articles like a squirrel storing nuts for winter. One day, I would have my garden.

That’s when it hit me. Why join a gym and literally force myself to get exercise? I could spend the same amount of money on supplies for my garden. Instead of trudging along on a treadmill and staring at a wall, I could be hauling soil and hoeing rows. Instead of forcing myself, I could treat myself. I could do something to help myself live longer and be happier at the same time!

So I went for it. And though I won’t be getting into skinny jeans any time soon, I have lost some weight. But even better, I found an effective way to manage my stress while realizing a dream. There is nothing more soothing and satisfying to me than to take a basket outside and fill it with fresh vegetables from my garden. On a hectic day it is so easy to give myself permission to shut the door to my home office and go out in the garden for a half hour to recharge. When I crave a snack I graze in my garden or treat myself with a gardening article. My garden taught me being healthy is not just about weight. It’s about finding out how to be happy.

Why does Hydroponic Farming Need Small Outer Space for Growing?

Farming is rarely done in some countries mainly because governments in those countries prefer importing the goods they need. Many farmers are not given a proper pay for their harvest, therefore most of them end up going in search of newer jobs. Farms were totally abandoned as a result of this.

The gravity of all this was seen when shortages occurred. It was time to enhance the agriculture business in countries that were good at it. The traditional way of farming saw a limited harvest that came only during certain seasons. The answer to this was hydroponic farming. All it needed was a nutrient solution and less soil.

Since the plants do not thrive on soil, the nutrients help in sustaining the goodness of each plant. The traditional way saw the harvest of a plant occurring just once or twice a year. Thanks to hydroponic farming, the case is different here. Since the harvest produced is not limited to one season, fruits and vegetables can be obtained all year round. Another advantage of hydroponic farming is that the whole farming process consumes only a little space therefore leaving extra space for other plants to be planted. Today even households use this method for their farming in their very own backyard. Most countries that use hydroponic farming to harvest fresh fruits and vegetables see a boost in their food production. This is a great opportunity for countries that sell the excess to neighboring countries.

Hydroponic farming can be done in two ways. One is the usage of a medium culture and the other is the solution culture. When a medium culture is chosen, farmers need to use mediums such as sand or gravel, etc to handle the whole system. For the solution culture, it is usually a nutrient solution that is used. Since there is a lesser amount of water used for hydroponic farming than the traditional way, farmers are able to save water to about 80%. Additionally, since soil isn’t used, plants are saved from soil-borne diseases.

For the watering sytems, you can use pond pump in your hydroponic farming. A pond pump is a great item for both saving money and being more environmentally friendly for your hydroponics farming. For further information about this pond pump, you can check out the special website on large pond pumps where you can get the best fish pond filters choices and related information.

Thinking About Health Care Off the Grid

One concern of almost every person on Earth is health care. We in the United States are fortunate to have the best health care system in the world, but if the current administration has its way, that may soon come to an end.Of course, no one is really against universal health care, if only it could work. The problem is that all evidence suggests it doesn’t. With the collapse of the American medical profession a serious possibility, we must consider the possibility we’ll have to provide for our own medical needs.

All good health care begins with preventive measures. It’s like the old saying “a penny saved is a penny earned.” Well, it’s better to stay healthy than to have to work to get well. Fortunately the Earth has provided us with nearly everything we need to accomplish this. Every day scientists discover a myriad of health benefits from fruits, vegetables and herbs. Many of these things have been discovered by previous civilizations and lost, just to be discovered again.

One of these so-called miracle foods is pomegranate. For quite some time, nutritionists have known the health benefits of this fruit. It is a powerful antioxidant and is full of vitamins. It is a proven cancer fighter and is especially effective against breast, skin and prostate cancers. It is effective in combating heart disease and Alzheimer’s, and is an effective anti-aging substance. The general health benefits alone are well worth taking advantage of what it has to offer. But now, scientists have identified yet another benefit offered by the humble pomegranate.

Overuse of antibiotics have given birth to strains of super bacteria known as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). This is basically a bacterial infection that has grown immune to our current supplies of antibiotics due to overuse. Scientists are now working with pomegranates to develope an effective treatment for MRSA. It turns out that the chemicals contained in the rinds, when mixed with vitamin C and some other substances, act as an extremely powerful antimicrobial agent. While this particular drug is still in the testing phase, it serves to remind us that often the simplest, most effective drugs, can be found in our gardens.

Given the volatility of the American health care system and the world economy as a whole, now is the time to prepare-before it’s too late. A little knowledge about the health benefits of common fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices can go a long way in a world with little or no formal medical care. Don’t be fooled by the pharmaceutical industry that would have you believe that life is unlivable without their chemical wonder drugs. These companies are out to make a profit, any way they can. Rest assured that the cloves of garlic growing in your backyard garden, a powerful anibiotic, have no such profit agenda, and will still be around long after greedy, incompetent politicians have destroyed health care as we know it.

Make Things Easier With Artificial Grass In Your Garden

Every person would like a low-maintenance garden and yet they still want it to look good and be practical. Thankfully, artificial grass is a terrific way to get the garden of your dreams at a reduced price. The fact it is low maintenance merely adds to the appeal and makes it a first class alternative for property owners up and down the country. Genuine grass is so last year.

The appeal of artificial grass is undeniable. It looks and feels like proper grass but there is no mowing necessary and you needn’t stress about it from one year to the next. Everyone knows that real grass grows rapidly in the warmer weather and as a property owner that takes pride in the look of their home, it is no stun that you’re going to have to tend to the garden quite regularly. Wouldn’t it be good if there was a much simpler solution? Well now there is, and to those who haven’t observed the positive aspects of artificial grass, you really are missing out!

Have a look at Homebase Garden Furniture for more ideas.

Low maintenance gardens begin with artificial grass and then you can look at artificial topiary and trees to strengthen the natural beauty of the garden. The artificial grass is fully porus and drains like real grass, so guests won’t even be able to tell the difference. In fact, as your garden sits there looking green and healthy, there are sure to be envious visitors who notice that their real grass is brown, full of weeds and in need of a bit of TLC. Owners of real grass generally get unhappy at the level of upkeep it needs in order to keep it looking good, and that’s why artificial grass has become such a favourable option.

If you have decided that’s it and its time you had something a bit easier to work with, try out artificial grass instead.
