If Sunglasses were Formula 1 teams
The two things go well together, like ham and tomato, brick and mortar or tuna fish paste and bananas. Ok maybe not the last one, but there is a massive synergy between sunglasses and formula one, whether through the drivers, the fans watching on or the manufacturers who pour millions in to the fastest advertising boards in the world.
So what if designer sunglasses were actually formula one teams, which glasses would be Ferrari and who would be McLaren and Red Bull? Firstly you need to work out what to base it on, which makes it a lot harder than initial thinking may have lead you to believe. Do you simply look at logos and decide whose are alike or do you look at company philosophy and prestige? When you use all of these things, you don’t get anything close to conclusive, but it does do one thing and thats cause arguments with your friends.
First up we have Oakley sunglasses, surely the Ferrari of the glasses world, regardless of your nationality and excusing the fact they aren’t Italian. Where would you put Police sunglasses? well considering their popularity, random bad boy image and considering their style, you’d have to make them Red Bull Racing.
The two Britons at McLaren are probably the biggest advocates of glasses on the entire grid, so they might be more interested than most to see which company they get. The obvious choice would be Ray Ban, inexorably linked with Jenson Button through his previous employers of course, but we’ll leave Ray Ban for the Mercedes team and instead McLaren get Hugo Boss, a company that has sponsored the team in the past and whose values seem closely aligned with that of the Woking outfit.
We’ve not chosen the entire grid, so feel free to chip in with your own suggestions as to who would be Williams, Lotus and the rest but we’ll leave you with one final thought, perhaps poor old Hispania Racing would be Woolworths 49p kids sunglasses in this piece, unless you know something we don’t.
