Increase In Penalty Points On Driving Licence For Drivers Who Use Mobile Phones

Currently in the UK you can receive three penalty points on your driving licence for talking on your mobile without a hands-free set. The government is now considering raising this to four penalty points. With only twelve points allowable on your driving licence, you could face a driving ban if you were caught driving while talking on a mobile three times. There are heavy fines as well as penalty points which could face those found guilty of handheld mobile phone use when driving as this has been outlawed since 2006.

But instead of these punishments being a deterrent, there has been a shocking increase in the number of drivers who are still using a handheld mobile while driving. The crackdown did seem to be working in the beginning but recently people have begun to revert back to using their handhelds while driving. Research has shown that people are four times more likely to have a car accident if they are talking on a handheld mobile phone so this is very worrying. And it has been reported that as well as making phone calls, some people have even been emailing or texting from their phones while they are driving.

This practice is very dangerous and must be tackled sooner rather than later. Many years ago many people drove their cars after drinking but with the dangers associated with that activity there are not many people who would do this now. There needs to be a comparable shift in the way people view mobile phone use when driving. People need to know that this can be just as dangerous as drink driving. If adding extra penalty points to people’s driving licence can cause a change in society then it seems likely that the government will adopt such plans. But if everyone just availed of a hands free kit this problem could be solved.

If you are looking for a driving related job, any potential employer is well withing their right to do official checks to the type of license you hold . Driving licence is something which you should take very seriously indeed. Don’t try applying for specific driving jobs without first holding the appropiate license.
