Learning How To Build A Shed

There are some things to ponder before you decide how to build a shed from scratch. First you should consider what it will be used for. It will need to be large enough to neatly house all the items you will want to put in it. Also note the amount of room in your backyard you are planning on placing it. Will there be enough room for the shed without it overtaking your yard?

A very important thing to remember when building a shed will be getting a permit. Your municipality may require a building permit. If a permit is required you will need to obtain it before you start this task. Keep in mind you may also have restrictions on the type and size of shed you can build. Be sure you are allowed to build before you start this task.

Once you clear this hurdle you are ready to build. You can either build using a set of plans that can be purchased at most home improvement or hardware stores or use a kit that contain all the necessary materials.

A shed kit will only require you following the instructions, it will only require common household tools to assemble. If you have chosen to purchase your own lumber you will need several tools. A circular saw, hammer, tape measure, level and square are some essential tools. You might require more tools depending on the design and the features you want to build.

A storage shed typically consists of four walls with one wall containing a door large enough to allow access for any equipment to be stored in it, a floor, and a roof. Two by four lumber and plywood is likely to be employed to build the foundation and walls. To prevent rot or decay treated lumber should be used for the base. The roof will usually be constructed of 2 X 4 rafters with plywood sheathing and either shingles or tin as a covering.

Once you have revised your plans, have all the materials and tools required you can start building. First construct the floor with pressure treated 2 x 4 or 4 x 4. The frame is then covered using plywood decking. 2 X 4 lumber is then used to build the wall frame, plywood will then cover the outside. Once the walls are up, place the rafters and your roofing material on top of the walls. Once construction is completed, you can paint or stain the outside to protect it from the weather. Buying or building a shed will no doubt be a terrific addition to your home..
