Traditional rivalries to one side, it is good to see that tourism in the ‘valleys’ of Wales is thriving. Perhaps it is a combination of things: the recession, the value of the pound, nightmare scenarios at airports. People have probably realised that there is potential in visiting somewhere closer to home. It certainly is good news for Wales and Scotland, but not so good for the Spanish and Portugese.

It’s now more attractive for continental visitors to come, as a result of the weaker pound. A fact that has not gone unnoticed by the Wales Tourist Board, who are currently in the process of appointing an agency to probe further into this area.

According to the European Commission, 48 per cent of people intend to spend their holiday time in their own country, an increase of 5 per cent on the previous year. To me it would appear that there is a growing trend. You might see a visit to Wales or Scotland as a local one if you are English. It is not because we feel we should laud it over them, but more a similarity of our cultures. The physical link is important, as is a shared currency, language and the fact that there is no water barrier. Although very much an Englishman, I still consider holidays in Wales is a very different event.

I have only really experienced small areas of Wales, i embarassed to say, and mainly in the north of the country. One of the greatest things to do in Wales would be walking to the summit of Mount Snowdon, and a visit to the Snowdonia National Park. I love the mountain region, and would naturally choose holiday cottages in Wales as the accommodation I would most like to experience. I remember staying once in a little cottage not too far from the pass at Llanberis. From there it was possible to see the rugged peaks of Snowdon, and the other beautiful scenery such as the twin lakes of Llyn Padarn and Llyn Peris. From Llanberis you can catch a train or walk up one of the many routes to the summit, over 3,000 feet high.

The National Parks in Southern Utah can be a wonderful spot to come to. Visiting these amazing parks can be the start of an incredible day. These reasons include.

1. Beauty

The state parks in Utah have some beautiful Scenery in Utah. The best part about visiting these parks is that they contain some unbelievable natural rock structures. The Arches National Park is a perfect example of this.

With the gigantic Sandstone Arches that are scattered throughout the Arches National Park and the Canyonland National Park you had better bring your camera so that you can get some photos of the great land.

2. Exercise

Exercising is one of the best ways to become healthier and to extend your life. Well the National Parks in Utah all contain a number of great hiking trails. You can see nature and improve your health all at the same time. The added exercise you get not to mention the fresh air that surrounds the parks helps you to keep healthy.

3. Wildlife

Utah is filled with wildlife. Spending some time at parks like Zion National Park or Capitol Reef is a great way to go looking for wild animals. Capitol Reef actually has a huge deer population, so if you go camping over there you can pretty much assume you will run into a lot of deer.

4. Get Away From It All

Life can definately be pretty stressful. It is hard to work day in and day out without much change, and then there are all the everyday problems that happen. Sometimes you just want to take some time off and get a breath of fresh air, going to the middle of nature is aperfect way to do that.

Not only do these parks allow you to see the wildlife, but they also help you to calm down and get back to your roots. Visiting the wilderness is just nice to do and can be a very relaxing way to spend the day.

3. Wildlife

4. Get Away From It All

Life can be busy and stressful. We all have things that we have to do throughout our lives and that can make up rush to get things done. Sometimes getting away from it all is the best thing that you can do.

This great outdoor state has something for everyone to do in it. Below is a list of 5 great things you can do while traveling around the state.

1. National Parks

Utah has 5 large Utah National Parks, each shows off the beautiful Utah scenery. From the Arches National Park which contains some amazing rock formations to Zion National Park which shows off Utah’s forests, the state has a wide variety of different landscapes.

2. State Parks

There are also a lot of smaller state parks which are all very fun to stay at. One state park, Sand Hollow can be a great place to take the family for the day, because there are a number of small rocks in the middle of the reservoir that you acn easily swim to.

3. Fishing

Utah has some nice fishing holes to go to. Visiting the state’s fishing lakes can lead to an exciting time and a great experience. And with the large number of great lakes throughout the state you have a lot of places to choose from.

4. Dinosaur Bones

Utah also has a lot of interesting dinosaur bones. There are many different places out here which offer some amazing finds, for instance Johnsons Farm in Utah holds the worlds largest single Dinosaur track block.

5. Best Friends

I’m sure some of you have heard of the Best Friends animal sanctuary. The find pets who have been abandoned or abused and adopt them until they can find other homes for the animals. They were among the first to help out during Hurricane Katrina and they rehabilitated many of Michel Vicks dogs after they were taken away from him. It is a great place to go if you love animals or want to adopt a pet yourself.

Visiting the sanctuary will help to support the park as it relies on donations to stay up and running.

5. Best Friends

I’m sure that many of you have at least heard of the Best Friend Animal Sanctuary. The find pets who have been abandoned or abused and adopt them until they can find other homes for the animals. They where one of the first groups to arrive to help out after Hurricane Katrina and they also rehabilitated many of Michel Vicks dogs when they where taken away from him. It is a fantastic area to visit if you love animals, want to adopt an animal or just want to help out.

Visiting the sanctuary will help to support the park as it relies on donations to stay up and running.
