Landfill Diversion and Recycling

It was our challenge to stimulate and market waste minimisation and recycling programs in line with Zero Waste SA’s strategic plan of reducing waste to landfill by 25% within 10 years.

2006 was a major year for us, it was the year that we fine tuned our enviromentally friendly policy and it was the year that we rolled out the ‘Landfill Diversion Challenge Program’. We had now become South Australia’s first Front lift waste business to divert waste from Landfill by the RTF (resource to fuel) method. What began as 100% of our waste to Landfill in 2005 has now in 2010 reduced to just 67%. That’s a reduction of 33% to Landfill in 5 years. We have also increased cardboard and steel assortment by seven fold.

With the start of our new product ‘Mixed Recyclables collection’ to the market our goal for the next 5 years is to minimize our C & I to landfill by another 17%. This means that If we want to realize these targets we will need to extract more resources from our waste stream.

Signal Waste and Recycling will make investments of over 2 million dollars in equipment and a new recycling facility over the subsequent 5 years to achieve this goal.

With the announcement of the increase of the EPA Waste to Landfill Levy to $35 a tonne in July 2011 now is the time to look at all your internal waste and recycling streams and how best to minimize these. Here are a number of tips on recycling methods to help cut these forthcoming expenses.

Recycling Tips –

Is your service provider proactive on recycling or are they only engaged in sending more tonnage to their privately owned landfills?

Are you sorting your product on site? The labour content in the recycling sector is by far the largest expense to our sector. By extracting metals, cardboard, paper, plastics, timber, green waste, food waste, bottles and cans, bricks and concrete into their very own receiving containers you will be saving on outsourced labour fees and any future increase in the EPA waste to landfill levy.

Get a ‘mixed recyclable’ service where your product is taken offsite and sorted. Although it is an increase in cost due to outsourced labour you can still prevent the EPA waste to landfill levy.

Investigate ‘Free services’. Some of your product has value. Will a recycler take away or even pay to get rid of your product? Some recycling centres have no cost drop off services for food, mobile phones, cardboard, paper and plastics and pallets. You can even call your local charity.

Most importantly get some competent assistance.

We would like to Give thanks to all of our recycling partners who have made this all achievable – Zero waste SA, Sita-Resource Co, Visy, Amcor, Ferris Enterprises, Olympic Polymers, Magill Recycling and Advanced Plastic recyclers.

Environmental Policy

At Signal Waste & recycling it is our responsibility to encourage and promote to our customers and clientele in every way to become proactive and involved in waste minimisation and recycling programs. It is our responsibility as an organisation to further promote to the community as a whole the THREE R’s – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Therefore we are dedicated to continually enhancing our environmental efficiency by undertaking activities such as: Seeking methods to minimise waste to landfill. Checking out sustainable markets for recyclable materials so as to maximise recycling initiatives. Regular evaluation of new techniques.

Signal has had 5 fantastic Years of Success under the management of Micheal Bolderoff and Allen Bolderoff and we look forward to 2015.

Everyone of us needs some form of relaxation, a task that helps release stress and tension from our everyday lives. Many have discovered that gardening has helped them maintain a peaceful composure. Gardening has been a worldwide act for thousands of years, so it must work.Click through here for more information on vegetable garden layout.

The economic state of our country is not the greatest, the unemployment rate is increasing greatly. For some families planting a vegetable garden would help financially. If families were to be able to grow a good portion of their own vegetables, it would save them money that could be spent elsewhere. Gardening can give you back a few extra dollars. As you plant flowers and rose bushes, your gardening passion is also helping out nature.

While you glance around at your garden you can notice humming birds and bumble bees moving from one flower to another. The nectar is their food and they pollenize as they go. Hummingbirds will come back year after year if you have a flower garden, they know where the dependable food is. They must appreciate your gardening interest; you’ve created an annual buffet and rest stop for them. The most popular method of gardening today is organic gardening.

This type of gardening requires no harmful pesticides or chemicals which contribute to soil and water pollution. So you are contributing to a better environment when you garden organically. Use carrot peels, eggshells, other food waste as fertilizers your soil will be enriched without being polluted. Everyone should go green. You can obtain more information on vegetable garden layout here.

There are many benefits to gardening including all the above, not to mention good exercise and fresh air. Wear light clothing and sunscreen to protect yourself from the suns rays. Do not overexert yourself. Have fun while enjoying your hobby of gardening. You can get more tips on vegetable seeds here.
