Ways To Cool Down In The Sun This Summer
The MET Office have predicted a particularly hot summer for 2010, stating that temperatures should soar into the 30′s (°C) over the coming months.
So with the sun looking like it could be a mainstay this summer, it’s about time to be planning those family days out in the sunshine. If it gets that little bit too hot for you, here are a couple of tips for coping with the sun:
Take a swim / Get wet
Water takes heat away from the body 240 times faster that the air, so if you’re really struggling with the heat get yourself wet! Take a swim, a dip in the sea or take a cool shower, all should make you feel much better in a short amount of time.
Drink more fluids
Sweating causes your body to lose water, which will need to be replaced in order to keep your body full hydrated. Make sure you drink lots of juice or water to help you replace any lost fluid and keep you feeling cool. Try and avoid alcohol (as tempting as it is) as it will dehydrate you, which is the opposite effect of what you’re after.
Sweat and breath more!
Admittedly, you can’t really choose to increase the amount you sweat, but sweating is an extremely effective method for cooling the body; accounting for around 25% of your bodies heat loss. Try and keep hydrated and although you might be fairly sweaty, you should find you start to cool down considerably. Breathing deeply may make you feel a little better, as around one third of this heat loss from evaporation occurs in the lungs and airways.
Use electronics
There are a massive number of electronic items available designed to help keep you cool in the heat. If you’re looking to keep cool in the home or bedroom, try a ceiling fan which will both reduce temperature and increase the airflow in the house. Or you could try air conditioners, which are a little more expensive, but they’re extremely effective and will ensure you always have a comfortable temperature in your home, regardless of what it’s like outside. If you’re looking for something a little more portable, you could invest in a small, portable air conditioner, which is ideal for keeping you cool wherever you’re planning on going this year.
